READFIELD — Two children who were riding on a school bus and the driver of a car that smashed into it were taken to the hospital early Monday.

The injured children's parents reported that they were bumped and bruised but otherwise fine, said Rich Abramson, Regional School Unit 38's superintendent.

Judith Beck, 69, of Readfield was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center as a precaution, said Readfield Fire Chief Matt Dunn.

About 30 children were on the bus, Abramson said. The two students who were taken to the hospital were fifth- and sixth-graders who attend Readfield Elementary School and Maranacook Community Middle School, he said.

Abramson said other children were shaken up but appeared to be all right when a second bus arrived to take them to school.

Dunn said the bus was stopped on the side of the road when Beck ran into the back end.

State Trooper Bill Baker said Beck was driving south on Old Kents Hill Road in a 2004 Subaru Outback when she looked away for a moment and hit the bus.
