LEWISTON — Tyler Kuehl scored on a 25-yard interception return with 9:39 left in the fourth quarter as Bates defeated Bowdoin 28-24 Saturday in a New England Small College Athletic Conference football game.
The Bobcats rallied with 14 points in a span of just over a minute for their first victory in seven games. The Polar Bears fell to 2-5.
Bates quarterback Trevor Smith completed 21 of 31 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns, and Tom Beaton caught nine passes for a career-high 152 yards and a touchdown.
Beaton's touchdown came on a 58-yard flea flicker that cut Bates' deficit to 17-14 midway through the third quarter. The Polar Bears pushed the lead back to 10 points on a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown by Matt Leotti 2:24 into the fourth.
The Bobcats responded with a three-play, 52-yard touchdown drive that ended with a 23-yard pass from Smith to Matt Gregg less than two minutes later. Kuehl's winning score came just 1:05 after that.
Nick Tom finished with 73 yards rushing for Bowdoin, and Oliver Kell and R.J. Shea each scored on 1-yard runs.
MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY 35, FITCHBURG STATE 15: Tyler Angell rushed for 110 yards on 15 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 4 yards and 43 yards as the Mariners (8-1, 6-1 New England Football Conference) jumped out to a 28-9 halftime lead and cruised past the Falcons (4-6, 2-5) at Fitchburg, Mass.
Todd Murphy completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Alex Coulombe and also ran for 41 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. Jon Hussey added 77 yards rushing for the Mariners, including a 21-yard TD run.
The Maine Maritime defense was led by Wade Mondoux, who intercepted two passes and had seven tackles.
COLBY 34, TUFTS 31: Nick Kmetz threw four touchdown passes in the second half as the Mules (4-3) rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to defeat the Jumbos (2-5) at Waterville.
Kmetz completed 16 of 26 passes for 273 yards. His final touchdown of the game came on a 41-yard pass to Matt Hellinger that gave the Mules a 34-24 lead with 5:54 left.
The Jumbos elected to kick off to Colby following their touchdown just 2:35 later, and the Mules ran out the clock aided by an 11-yard run by Dan Prunier on third-and-1.
Hellinger finished with five catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns, and Prunier added 77 yards rushing and 24 yards receiving.
HUSSON 74, BECKER 22: Julius Williams rushed for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 16 carries, and the Eagles (4-5, 3-3 ECFC) gained 686 yards, including 552 rushing, as they cruised past the Hawks (0-10, 0-6) at Bangor.
Husson quarterback Jack Hersom completed five passes for 134 yards, and Mike Toothaker added 112 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The Eagles scored at least 14 points in each quarter.
Williams became the first player in school history to go over 1,000 yards rushing in more than one season.
FIELD HOCKEY
TRINITY 2, BOWDOIN 1: Trinity scored twice in the final eight minutes, including the winner with eight seconds remaining, to defeat Bowdoin in the semifinals of the NESCAC tournament.
It was the Polar Bears' first conference tournament loss since 2004, forcing them to rely on an at-large NCAA tournament bid.
The Polar Bears broke a scoreless tie 13:43 into the second half when junior midfielder Ingrid Oelschlager scored on a pass by senior forward Shavonne Lord from the right corner that deflected off goalie Gina Dinallo directly to Oelschlager's stick 5 yards in front of the cage.
The Bantams tied the game when Carrie Wolcott converted a pass by Maggie Epstein with 7:20 remaining.
Payson Sword outraced the defense to Christy Bradley's centering pass to score the winner.
