Portland Fire Department recognizes its employees for merit

PORTLAND — The Portland Fire Department presented its annual Merit Awards on Saturday, honoring firefighters, paramedics and their companies for service to the community in a ceremony at Portland High School. The awards included recognition for the top officer, firefighter and emergency medical provider.

The Capt. John Rafferty Officer of the Year Award went to Lt. Alan Bouchard, who was cited for his reliability and positive outlook and level-headed attitude.

The Thomas G. O'Connor Sr. Firefighter of the Year Award went to Stanley Tenpenny for his commitment to his job, cooperation with coworkers, initiative and loyalty.

The Nicholas G. Knapp EMS Provider of the Year Award was given to Meagan Letellier, for her leadership, initiative, cooperation and loyalty.

The Chief Oliver T. Sanborn Administrative Service Award went to two people: firefighter and paramedic Terri McGuire and electrical division employee Donald Perron. The award honors individual excellence.

Capt. Keith Gautreau won the William M. Perry Community Service Award, which honors an individual who improved public relations between the fire department and the community.

The Portland Veteran Firefighters Award went to retired captain Harold Boothby for his work at the Portland Fire Museum.

The Kevin M. Malone Class B Merit Award was given to firefighter Timothy Flynn and firefighter and paramedic Ryan Walsh. The award recognizes an act of bravery or initiative and capability.

Several companies won Deputy Chief William B. Steele Unit Citations, which recognize outstanding company operations dependent on teamwork and cooperation. Three citations were given: Ladder 3, Engine 6 and Medcu 3, platoon 1, shared one award; Engine 6, Medcu 3, platoon 1, shared another; and Engine 5, Medcu 6, platoon 3, shared the third.

The Michelle Wright Esprit de Corps Award is given annually to an EMS platoon, partnership or team that maintains and displays excellence in operations, cooperation, quality of work, safety-mindedness and initiative. This year, paramedic and firefighter Meagan Letellier and firefighter Caroline Harden won the honor.

The Liberty Mutual Firemark Esprit de Corps Award went to firefighter Lt. Creed Ray, EMT Robert McTigue, firefighter David Kenny, Lt. Robert Pinder, and firefighters and EMTs John Joyce and Randy Stewart.
