FAIRFIELD — Lawrence had its running game taken away and couldn't find a way to stop Rashon Edgerton.
Despite having one of the top running backs in the state in Christian Powers, Lawrence was held to 42 yards rushing in the second half of its Eastern Class A semifinal Friday night against Brunswick.
Edgerton, meanwhile, took over the game. Brunswick's multitalented wide receiver and running back rushed for a touchdown, caught a TD pass and threw for a score as the third-seeded Dragons upset second-seeded Lawrence, 27-14.
"They knew they had to stop our running game and they did," said Powers, who rushed for 1,207 yards in the regular season but was held to 83 yards against Brunswick.
Brunswick (9-1) advances to the regional final against top-ranked Bangor (10-0). Lawrence ends the season at 8-2.
The Bulldogs took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter on a 16-yard TD run by Powers, but Brunswick responded with a big play on its ensuing drive. With the Dragons facing third-and-17 from their own 42, Dylan Walton broke a 57-yard run. Quarterback Stefan Jensen sneaked in from the 1, and Edgerton made the extra point to tie the game at halftime.
"That helped our momentum a lot because they had scored 14 straight points," Edgerton said. "To go in with a tie game was huge for us."
In the second half, Edgerton made big play after big play and the Dragons' defense shut down Lawrence.
The Bulldogs actually drove to the Brunswick 11 on their first drive of the second half, but Nick Votta intercepted a Bobby Belanger pass and Brunswick took over on its own 20.
Edgerton converted on third-and-2 from the Brunswick 49, stretching for a first down. He then caught two passes for 32 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown pass with 3:45 left in the third quarter. His extra point gave Brunswick a 21-14 lead.
Brunswick gave up one first down on Lawrence's next drive but forced a fumble and took over on its own 32 late in the third quarter. On third-and-16 from the Lawrence 43, Edgerton took a handoff, ran toward the right sideline and threw a pass over the defense to Walton for a touchdown that made it 27-14.
"He's quite an athlete," Lawrence Coach John Hersom said. "Having not seen him, they were able to hurt us on a couple of things we probably hadn't prepared for. The long halfback pass was probably something they saved for a while. That was a good play call."
Lawrence was forced to throw the ball and was unable to sustain any drives. John Williams, who played a key role for Brunswick from his defensive end position, picked off a pass in the final seconds to seal the victory.
"We have really good linebackers and our defensive line was getting great penetration," Edgerton said.
Brunswick took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 13-yard run by Edgerton. Lawrence tied it on a 5-yard pass from Belanger to Mark Yandian early in the second quarter.
