Maine Colleges: Husson outstrokes St. Joe's

STANDISH — Husson had the edge in the fourth round of a stroke-off Wednesday to defeat St. Joseph's 2-1 in the semifinals of the North Atlantic Conference field hockey tournament.

Skye Ellis scored with no time remaining in regulation for the fourth-seeded Eagles (8-7, 4-3 NAC) to send the game to overtime. Courtney Allen sent a penalty corner from the right side into a cluster of players, and Ellis gained control and put it past Monks goalie Meaghan Johnson, who made nine saves.

NCAA rules state a game will be prolonged to permit the completion of a penalty corner both at halftime and the end of regulation.

Julia Ostrowski scored in the first minute of the second half to give the top-seeded Monks (14-4, 7-0) a 1-0 lead.

Kristen Capen had 12 saves for the Eagles.

NICHOLS 3, UNE 1: Sisters Lauren and Chelsea Correia scored early in the second half to help third-seeded Nichols (16-3) defeat second-ranked UNE (13-3) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinal at Biddeford.

Taryn Flagg scored in the 63rd minute to pull UNE within one, but six minutes later Emily Widdison scored for the Bison.

Krista-Jean Forand made seven saves for Nichols. Ayla Nelson knocked away six shots in goal for the Nor'easters.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

SIMMONS 1, ST. JOSEPH'S 0: Fifth-ranked Simmons (11-5-3, 7-2-3 GNAC) knocked off top-seeded St. Joseph's (12-6-2, 9-1-2) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference semifinal at Standish.

Anna Bolton scored in the 24th minute off a cross from Lindsey Butler, beating goalie Katye Mayo to the upper-right corner.

Mayo finished with one save. Simmons goalie Rachel Elliott stopped five shots.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

DIVISION III POLL: Bowdoin and the University of Southern Maine were named to the USA Today/ESPN Division III top 25 in a preseason poll.

The Polar Bears were voted eighth and the Huskies 12th. Washington University of St. Louis was ranked No. 1.
