KITTERY: Navy ship visits shipyard to pick up submarine
A massive Navy ship has left Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with a nuclear-powered research sub that's due to be delivered to Washington state.
The 609-foot-long USS Carter Hall has plenty of space for the 150-foot NR-1, a deep-water research and engineering submarine that went into duty in 1969. The sub arrived in Kittery in December 2008 and was officially decommissioned nearly a year ago in Groton, Conn.
The Carter Hall dominated the waterfront after its arrival Monday. It left Wednesday afternoon.
The dock landing ship is designed to transport and launch amphibious craft and vehicles in assault operations.
BANGOR: Thieves return to substation, take replaced copper wire
Bangor Hydro Electric Co. says copper wire has been stolen from one of its substations.
Utility crews finished making repairs from a wire theft Friday evening. When they returned Monday, they discovered the thieves had returned to steal the newly installed copper wire from the substation in its northern service territory.
Bangor Hydro safety officer John Greaves said the utility is working with the sheriff's department and state police to find the thieves.
Greaves said the thieves could be injured or killed by cutting the wires. Power lines and substations operate at as much as 345,000 volts, which is 3,000 times that of outlets in homes.
