SHAWN COLVIN

Award-winning singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin, best known for the 1997 hit "Sunny Came Home," returns to Maine Saturday for a concert in Portland. ORCHID ENSEMBLE

Based in Canada, the Orchid Ensemble is a trio performing traditional and contemporary Chinese and world music. The trio's album, "Road to Kashgar," was nominated for a Juno Award. The performance tonight is based on "Road to Kashgar," which celebrates the heritage of the Silk Road. Call 782-7228 for tickets.

NOVEMBER 5

Capitol Steps

For a quarter of a century, the political and social satire ensemble the Capitol Steps has poked fun at our political and social leaders. Last month, the group released its latest album, "Barackin' Around the Christmas Tree." The group performs two shows in Brownfield and two in Rockland this week. Le Vent du Nord

Quebecois quartet, Le Vent du Nord, is performing a series of concerts in Maine this week. The Canadian band will be in Portland on Friday, and is in Unity tonight. The band isn't scheduled to return to Maine until March, when it plays the Strand in Rockland. For tickets to tonight's show, call 948-7469. Kinobe

Kinobe (pronounced CHI-NO-BÉ) and his band, Soul Beat Africa, take traditional African roots music and blend it with world music traditions using traditional African instruments and guitars. Laura Kargul

On Friday, pianist and University of Southern Maine music faculty member Laura Kargul premieres a work long considered lost. She'll perform Cesar Franck's "Souvenirs d'Aix-la-Chapelle" at the university's Gorham campus. She'll also perform two works based on material from operas. Kargul will repeat her program in concert on Nov. 21 at the Freeport Performing Arts Center. Call 780-5555 for tickets to Friday's concert.

"Kimberly Akimbo"

The Originals present "Kimberly Akimbo" Friday through Nov. 14. The play tells the story of a teenage girl who has a health condition that causes her body to age faster than it should. The dark comedy is not only a skewed coming-of-age story, but a look at a dysfunctional family. Call 929-5412 for tickets.
