St. Joseph's advances in men's soccer with a 2-1 semifinal win at home

Jack Lafreniere scored the winning goal for top-seeded St. Joseph's (13-7-1, 7-2 GNAC) in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference 2-1 men's soccer semifinal win over No. 4 Norwich University (10-7-2, 5-3-1) on Tuesday in Standish.

Jesse West scored the first goal after 40 minutes of scoreless play off a Matt Barlion header toward the corner of the net. Lafreniere made it 2-0 15 minutes later.

Zack Blodgett scored for Norwich at 83:42.

St. Joseph's plays No. 6 Emerson in the GNAC championship Saturday in Standish.

FIELD HOCKEY: Paula Bartalamia scored the winning goal in overtime as Fitchburg State beat the University of Southern Maine 2-1 in the Little East Conference quarterfinal at Fitchburg, Mass.

Mari Roma also scored for the No. 3 Falcons (14-4). Caitlin Albert scored for No. 6 USM (10-10) with an assist from Haley Carter.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Tracy Sales and Angela Wozniak scored to give Western Connecticut a 2-0 win over USM in the first round of the Little East Conference tournament at Danbury, Conn.

Molly Miller had two saves to earn the shutout for No. 4 Western Connecticut (10-9-1) and Alison Bradley turned away 10 shots for No. 5 USM (4-15).

HOCKEY

AHL: The Portland Pirates released Mark McCutcheon from his tryout contract. McCutcheon, a forward, played five games for the Pirates this season with two goals.
