YORK — Emma Clark had a message for her soccer team in the pregame huddle Monday: "I told them we had to score early and score often."

Talk about following through.

Top-ranked York scored twice in the first six minutes – the goals coming just 29 seconds apart – and knocked off No. 4 Yarmouth 4-1 to advance to the Western Class B girls' soccer final.

The Wildcats (14-2) added a third goal with 9:08 to play in the first half, then another with 24:01 remaining in the game.

York will play for the Western Maine title at home Wednesday against second-ranked Falmouth (11-1-4), the defending state champion.

"We got it done early," said York Coach Wally Caldwell. "Very rarely do we come out to play a team of that caliber and go up that quick."

Monday's game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to accommodate Yarmouth, which was struck by the flu.

Eleven Yarmouth players missed school Friday, eight were still sick Saturday, and two starters stayed home Monday.

"We still had a strong team here today. York is an exceptional team," said Clippers Coach Rich Smith. "We've seen their firepower before. We knew it was coming. ... I think they're the best team in Maine, any class."

The Wildcats did not learn their game would be moved until a few hours before the scheduled kickoff Saturday.

"It messes with your emotions," said Clark. "You're ready to play and then you don't. But we practiced on Saturday to keep our touch."

That touch never disappeared.

Controlling both the ball and the tempo, York cruised to a 3-0 halftime lead on goals by Kayla Swasey, Ashley Taylor and Alexa Bando.

Swasey made it 1-0 just 4:33 into the game with a header off a corner kick by Clark.

Taylor, who was unmarked as she crashed the goal, one-timed a pass from Emily Mitchell just 29 seconds later to make it 2-0.

The third goal came when Bando finished a play started by Clark, who carried the ball down the left wing, beat a defender, and fed Bando in front of the goal with a soft pass directly to her shooting foot.

"She is the real deal, and she did it today," Caldwell said of Clark, who will play for Boston University next year.

Clark scored off a corner kick in the second half, bending a left-footed shot into the far corner of the goal to make it 4-0.

Yarmouth got on the board when Natalie Salmon scored on a direct kick with 15:13 remaining.

York and Falmouth split their two games in the regular season, setting up quite a rubber match Wednesday.

"Falmouth will come here with a little more athleticism," said Caldwell. "I'm hoping we can just create opportunities."
