The Western Class C quarterfinal boys' soccer game between Mt. Abram and Wiscasset was postponed Wednesday because of an H1N1 flu outbreak in Wiscasset.
Mt. Abram school officials said they were hesitant to send a team to Wiscasset because of fears it would come in contact with the potentially fatal flu.
"We knew the flu would come here at some point, but why rush it?" asked Mt. Abram school board chairman Mike Pond.
The board ultimately decided that playing the game Wednesday would hinder efforts to inform parents of the situation.
The teams will play at 3:30 p.m. today, after receiving permission from the Maine Principals' Association to postpone the game. Furthermore, Pond said, Mt. Abram will receive a shipment of H1N1 flu vaccines as a result of the situation.
"The students will be inoculated on Monday," he said.
Mt. Abram Athletic Director Jeff Pillsbury said the Roadrunners likely won't send a full team to Wiscasset.
"We're putting hand sanitizers on the bus and there will be no handshake at the end of the game," Pillsbury said.
Wiscasset Athletic Director Matt Carlson acknowledged that about 70 students missed school Tuesday while 30 were out sick Wednesday.
"We're currently experiencing the flu in our school we have some confirmed H1N1 cases," he said. "We got hit hard starting Monday."
