PORTLAND BALLET SPOOKTACULAR

Portland Ballet presents six shiver-inducing pieces for its annual Halloween Spooktacular. The pieces include "Night of the Living Dolls," "Love at First Bite" and "Danse Macabre."

Audience members are encouraged to attend in costume. There will be a costume parade during intermission.

JERSEY BOYS JOIN MAINE BOYS

Boys in grades four to eight make up the American Boychoir from the American Boychoir School in New Jersey. The Boychoir will perform works by European and American composers, and will be joined by the Boy Singers of Maine. Go to www.americanboychoir.org and click on "music" to hear audio. "Frost/Nixon"

Oscar-nominated movie "Frost/Nixon" was based on the play of the same name, which in turn was based on the actual 1977 series of interviews between former President Richard Nixon and TV personality David Frost. Good Theater presents the stage version of the story today through Nov. 22. Call 885-5883 for tickets.

When: 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and Nov. 4; 8 p.m. Saturdays; 2 p.m. Sundays; 3 p.m. Nov. 14

OCTOBER 30

Rubblebucket Orchestra

The nine-piece dance/rock band Rubblebucket Orchestra is on tour in support of its new, self-titled album, released earlier this month. Go to rubblebucket.com to listen to audio. The band will be joined by Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad. This is a 21-and-older show. Go to www.portlandasylum.com for information.

"Werewolf in London"

Freeport Community Players and Hallowell's Gaslight Theater are teaming up to present a minimal set production of "An American Werewolf in London" on Friday and Saturday in Freeport. Be assured that even though it's a minimal set, there will be special effects galore. Audience members are encouraged to attend in costume, as there will be a costume contest. The play contains strong language and mature content. Go to www.fcponline.org for more information.

"Spelling Bee"

The University of Southern Maine's School of Music presents "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" Friday through Sunday. In the musical comedy, six quirky youths compete in a spelling bee staged by equally quirky adults. On Halloween, audience members are encouraged to attend in costume and participate in the costume contest. Call 780-5555 for tickets.

When: 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday; 5 p.m. matinee on Sunday

Halloween with stars

The folks at the University of Southern Maine's Southworth Planetarium are hosting two Halloween parties on one night. Friday's activities begin with the planetarium's presentation of "The Moon Witch" followed by the telling of chilling tales in the dark of the star dome theater. Reservations recommended for the storytelling portion of the evening. Call 780-4249.

When: Showings of "The Moon Witch" at 6:15, 6:45 and 7:15 p.m. Storytelling program is from 8 to 9 p.m.

Where: Southworth Planetarium, University of Southern Maine, Falmouth Street, Portland

How much: "The Moon Witch" showings are $4 ($1 if you attend in costume). The storytelling program is $5.

 

James Montgomery

Well-known blues harmonica player James Montgomery is no stranger to Maine. He plays often around the state, including most recently at the Inn on the Blues in York Beach. On Friday night, he'll be in Portland with singer Henri Smith. Go to www.onelongfellowsquare.com or call 761-1757 for tickets.
