Children's Theatre

When the people in an ancient Chinese city come under attack, they pray for a dragon to save them. The dragon arrives, but no one believes that`s what she is when she gets there. The Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine presents "Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like" today through Oct. 25. Reservations recommended. Call 828-1234, Ext. 231.

"Annabel Lee"

All year long, the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's birthday has been celebrated across the country. The folks at the University of Maine in Farmington are dedicating a whole semester of events to the famous author. Tonight, "Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee" will be screened at the university. The film's writer and director will be in attendance. Go to poeafterpoe.wordpress.com for the semester`s events.

When: 6 p.m. (reception with writer/director); 7 p.m. (film screening)

Where: Art Gallery (reception) and Roberts Learning Center (screening), University of Maine, Farmington

OCTOBER 16

 

Osher Map Library

The University of Southern Maine's Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education has been closed for a couple of years for renovations. The expanded library celebrates its re-opening this weekend. Events include guided tours of the library, a lecture by John Hessler about how maps influenced Henry David Thoreau's ideas, a new exhibition and children`s activities. "A Night of Broadway"

Maine State Ballet fuses dance with the music of Broadway for four performances of "A Night of Broadway." Numbers will come from shows such as "A Chorus Line," "Camelot," "Crazy for You" and "Swing." Call 781-7672 for reservations.

When: 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Oct. 23-24

Where: Maine State Ballet Theater, 348 Route 1, Falmouth

"Beautiful Me"

South African dancer/choreographer and artistic director of Vuyani Dance Theater Gregory Maqoma performs his "Beautiful Me" program at Bates College in Lewiston Friday night. The program, set to a score for violin, cello, sitar and percussion, layers forms of Afro-fusion, visual dance theater and classical dance from India. Call 786-6135 for tickets.

Public Theatre

Lewiston's Public Theatre opens its season with "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" on Friday. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson`s story, the play features one actor portraying Dr. Jekyll and four playing the many faces of Mr. Hyde. The production runs through Oct. 25. Call 782-3200 for tickets.

When: 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, 7 p.m. Oct. 22
