Music meets activism; you meet our Marie Moreshead
By AIMSEL L. PONTI October 15, 2009

Go Anaheim! Enough said.

Lots of shows to get to, so I'll try not to dilly dally for too long. In fact, maybe I'll reinvent myself entirely this week and avoid the dilly dally altogether.

With a HUGE show at Empire, plus shows at One Longfellow and Port City Music Hall and still more at Blue, the Station and RJ's Pub, I barely have time to tie my shoes, let alone talk about how I'd like to send several Major League umpires a new pair of glasses and perhaps an instructional video called "So You Think You Can Umpire."

I don't see how I'll have time to schedule some batting cage time with David Ortiz so I can give him some tips. I barely even have time to craft my A-Rod and Posada voodoo dolls. I always, however, have time to sing the praises of the music scene here in Portland, and so with no further ado

Looking for a reason to support Protect Maine Equality? I'll give you 19 reasons.

Ready? If you go to Empire on Saturday night, you can hear performances in whole or in part by members of Spencer and the School Spirit Mafia, Gypsy Tailwind, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Jason Spooner, Kyle Gervais, Evan Casas, Johnny Fountain, Megan Jo Wilson, Will Gattis, the Rock & Roll Guru from WBLM, Chef Death Match, Kenya Hall, Lady Zen, the Number 9, As Fast As, the McCarthys, the Goodnight Process, Holy Boys Danger Club and Seymour.

They are joining forces, and with the shot heard 'round Maine, are saying "No On One" in support of marriage equality. A sellout is pre-ordained, so get tickets immediately. In fact, the show's been gathering so much momentum that a second, all-ages show has been added. That one kicks off at 5 p.m.

A Benefit Concert for Protect Maine Equality. 7 p.m. Saturday. Empire Dine & Dance, 575 Congress St., Portland. Ages 21 and older. $18. www.brownpapertickets.com and Bull Moose locations. (All-ages show is at 5 p.m. Same deal for tickets.)

Need to get in a good mood in a hurry? That's what I thought.

OK, no problem, just listen to "Broken Land Bell," the latest record from Brooklyn-based Americana/country swing/blues band the Wiyos. Instruments include harmonica, mouth trumpet, archtop guitar, resophonic guitar, banjo, ukulele, upright bass, console steel guitar, electric lap steel, parlor guitar and a mess of other old-time whiz bang doo-dads.

Lead vocals are by Michael Farkas, and you'll hear Parrish Ellis on a few. Then, of course there's guest vocalist, or shall I say human beatbox, Adam Matta, who is the cream in the coffee of songs like "Green Bottle" and the CD's opening track, "Roll on Down the Road." It's olde-time country swing on "Uncork the Whiskey," with the lyrics: "Tonight I'm drinking 'til the last drop's down/ You don't know misery, not like I do, so uncork the whiskey, I'll take a drink for you."

I've been listening to this album off and on for a month now, and have created a waltz/square-dance hybrid in my kitchen on several occasions. (No, I don't think I can dance.) I've also left the three-part harmonies to the band; they don't need (or want) my help, I assure you. So here's what y'all gotta do: Whirl on over to www.myspace.com/thewiyos and listen to "Promenade," and "Stomp," and then whirl on down to One Longfellow Square tonight.

The Wiyos. 8 tonight. One Longfellow Square, Portland. $12 in advance; $15 at the door. www.onelongfellow square.com; 761-1757.

Two Aussies and a Brit started playing together a few moons back and released their fourth record, "Fascination in July." The band is the Greencards, and the members absolutely love American roots music and have infused it with acoustic, alternative and bluegrass.

You'll soon realize, however, that the Greencards won't be fenced in by any particular description. The trio is singer/bassist Carol...
