PORTLAND — Ryan Kalish homered into the right-field pavilion with two outs in the 14th inning Friday night to give the Portland Sea Dogs a 3-2 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Hadlock Field.
Josh Papelbon (1-0) earned his first Double-A victory with three innings of hitless relief. Four Sea Dogs relievers – Chris Province, Andrew Dobies, Richie Lentz and Papelbon – combined to allow just one hit in eight scoreless innings.
Nathan Starner (1-2) took the loss despite striking out five and giving up just one hit in 3 2/3 innings.
New Hampshire scored single runs in the second and third innings against Felix Doubront. The Sea Dogs got a run back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Kalish, then tied it in the eighth when Juan Apodaca's two-out infield single drove home Jorge Jimenez, who started the inning with a double.
Doubront allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out one in six innings.
