BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Portland Sea Dogs opened an eight-game road trip Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over the Binghamton Mets to gain ground in the Eastern League playoff race.
The Sea Dogs moved within 4 1/2 games of second-place New Britain for the second of two playoff berths in the Northern Division. New Britain lost 5-4 to division-leading Connecticut.
Left-hander Felix Doubront (8-5) went six innings for Portland, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Portland had 13 hits off three Mets pitchers, with Daniel Nava going 3 for 5 with an RBI.
Portland took a 1-0 lead in the fourth against Binghamton starter Eric Brown (5-14) when Jorge Jimenez singled and scored on Jon Still's 38th double of the season.
The Mets tied it in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases with no outs. Doubront retired the next two batters before walking Emmanuel Garcia to force in a run.
Nava singled to drive in Yamaico Navarro with the go-ahead run in the fifth, then doubled and scored in the eighth on Jimenez's single.
Bryce Cox pitched the ninth for his 10th save.
