ALTOONA, Pa. — It hasn't taken catcher Luis Exposito long to make an impression on Portland Sea Dogs Manager Arnie Beyeler.
Exposito was promoted recently from Class A Salem and has hit safely in six of seven starts. After getting three hits in a 10-3 loss to Altoona on Tuesday night, he had four hits and drove in four runs Wednesday night as the Sea Dogs defeated the Curve 13-4 before a crowd of 4,656 at Blair County Ballpark.
"He hasn't been here very long," Beyeler said, "but as posted, he's a good catcher, he can throw and he's a pretty good hitter to have.
"He's getting his feet wet and doing a real nice job. He's a dangerous guy when he comes to the plate."
The 22-year-old Exposito hit .274 in 76 games at Salem and is continuing to swing well in Double-A.
"It's going pretty good," Exposito said. "I'm just sticking to what I was doing before I got called up."
Portland had 16 hits and scored three runs in the first, fifth and eighth innings before capping the win with four runs in the ninth.
"They were swinging the bats really well tonight," Altoona Manager Matt Walbeck said. "They didn't miss many pitches and definitely put a beating on our (pitching) staff."
The Sea Dogs got three hits and two walks in the first. Iggy Suarez led off with a double to left-center field and after the next two batters were retired, Suarez scored on a single by Jon Still. After Daniel Nava walked, he and Still scored on Exposito's double.
The lead didn't last long as Altoona scored one in the first and tied the game on Jason Delaney's two-run homer over the left-field bleachers in the fourth. The Curve had a chance to take the lead, but Portland starter Blake Maxwell got Pedro Alvarez to hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
The Sea Dogs reclaimed the lead with three runs in the fifth. They loaded the bases on hits by Jason Place and Suarez and a walk to Ryan Kalish. Jorge Jimenez was hit by pitch to force in a run and Suarez scored when Still hit into a double play. After a walk to Nava, Exposito ripped a single to score Kalish for a 6-3 lead.
The Sea Dogs made it 9-3 in the eighth on a solo homer by Nava and a two-run shot by Yamaico Navarro.
Ryan Miller relieved Maxwell after four innings and pitched 3 1/3 innings to earn his second win in three decisions. Miller faced only 10 batters from the fifth through the seventh, but ran into trouble in the eighth when Brian Friday doubled and scored on Delaney's one-out infield single.
Dustin Richardson took over after Delaney's hit and struck out the next two batters. He also pitched a scoreless ninth.
"The bullpen came in and held the damage to a minimum," Exposito said.
