From staff reports July 20, 2009

TODAY'S GAME

WHO: Sea Dogs (Adam Mills 6-5) at New Britain Rock Cats (TBA)

WHEN: 7:05 p.m.

TRENTON, N.J. — Edwar Gonzalez drove home Reegie Corona with a two-out bases-loaded single in the ninth inning Sunday afternoon to give the Trenton Thunder a 2-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs wasted a strong pitching performance by Ryne Lawson, who allowed one hit in six innings. He left with a 1-0 lead, but a pair of throwing errors by reliever Tommy Hottovy (0-1) led to both the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and the winning run in the ninth.

Corona drew a leadoff walk in the ninth, and Eduardo Nunez reached on an error by Hottovy. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Hottovy struck out Jesus Montero, but Chris Malec walked to load the bases and Gonzalez followed with a single in front of center fielder Josh Reddick.

Portland scored its only run in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Wilkin De La Rosa issued consecutive walks to Ryan Kalish and Jason Place, then threw two wild pitches.

The Sea Dogs finished with only three hits, as three Trenton relievers combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings. Grant Duff (3-0) was credited with the win for the second straight day after pitching a perfect ninth.
