As a girl from Florida I am very familiar with snowbirds, as a young girl I could not understand why anyone would want to live in Florida for the winter and New England for the summer. Then last May my husband and I were transferred to Portland, Maine through my husbands work because he is active duty military. Well needless to say I will never have questions again why people choose to become snowbirds, in fact I truly hope I can be one some day.
There is something magical that happens here during the summer, when I first became a Mainer; someone told me that people in the Northeast appreciate the summer more because we have to wait so long for it and I couldn't agree more. There is something to finally being able to put your toes in the sand on Old Orchard Beach, the sun setting after 8:00pm and everything becoming greener outside that makes everyone happier and I am certainly no exception to that rule.
Spending time in the sunshine on Peak's Island, walking the boardwalk at Old Orchard Beach and having lunch outside in the Old Port are things I truly find irresistible in the summer time. I have to confess that when I first found out we were moving here, excitement was not my first emotion but now that we are here and I am lucky enough to experience a Maine summer I can not imagine my life without it. And for a true Florida girl to say she loves Maine is some kind of achievement for the state of Maine.
