
BRUNSWICK — Brendan Garner slapped a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to drive in the eventual winning runs as Bowdoin downed St. Joseph's 7-5 in a college baseball game.
Reid Auger led Bowdoin (13-12) with three hits, and Dan Hicks was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Travis Adams had two hits, and Ian Lee and Ben Grant-Roy doubled for the Monks (14-8).
USM 24, ENDICOTT 15: Josh Mackey and Ryan Gaffney had four hits and three RBI apiece as the Huskies (15-3) beat the Seagulls (7-14) at Gorham.
Anthony D'Alfonso had two hits, including a home run, and five RBI; Gaffney doubled twice; and Mackey homered in the seventh inning for the Huskies.
USM trailed 15-14 before scoring 10 runs in the seventh.
SMCC 10, ST. JOSEPH'S JV 6: Scott Nappi had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and four RBI as the Seawolves (19-5) won at Standish.
SOFTBALL
ST. JOSEPH'S SWEEPS USM: Maria Labbe hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Monks (16-6) to a 5-4 win over the Huskies (1-17) in the opener at Standish.
Emily Leverone hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning of the second game to help St. Joseph's earn a 6-1 victory.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
NORTH CAROLINA'S 89-72 victory against Michigan State on CBS drew an 11.9 overnight rating and 19 share Monday night. That's down 7 percent from last year's 12.8/20 for a much more closely contested game, when Kansas beat Memphis in overtime.
CBS said the tournament averaged a 6.3 overnight rating and 13 share. That's up 5 percent from 2008.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND: Johnnie Jefferson and Jaykyri Simpson have been selected to play in the New England Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star game April 19 at Babson College.
Jefferson averaged a team-high 15.4 points per game and was chosen first team all-conference.
Simpson averaged 12.2 points per game and led the team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots (17). He was voted the league defensive player of the year and first team all-conference.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
COLBY 21, PLYMOUTH STATE 0: Kate Sheridan scored twice to become Colby's career goal leader as the Mules (9-1) downed the Panthers (1-6) at Waterville.
Sheridan, who has 169 career goals, surpassed Margaret Mauran's career mark of 167 in 1991. Sheridan is also the career points leader with 264.
