Voters approved a freeze on town salaries and budget cuts in a spending plan that's down more than $330,000 from last year.

The budget approved at Saturday's town meeting calls for spending $2.1 million, compared to last year's budget of $2.4 million, said Eva Leavitt, the town manager.

In addition to holding salaries steady, voters approved spending $200,000 on roads, a sharp reduction from the Road Committee's original request for $425,000, Leavitt said.

A summer roads program was also cut by $15,000, she said. Money in that account is used for seasonal projects, such as filling potholes and pruning roadside trees and shrubs.

Residents also approved an increase in an account used for historic preservation, agreeing to spend $33,500, compared to $15,000 last year. The money will be used to begin restoration of the Old Town House, a meeting hall in Turner, and a new roof for the Grand Army of the Republic hall, Leavitt said.

A change in the town ordinance will also require toddlers who aren't potty-trained to wear appropriate swim diapers at the town beach and established a voluntary committee to oversee operation of the beach.

In elections Friday, voters turned out two selectmen who sought to return to office. Jeffrey Timberlake and Dennis Richardson were elected over incumbents Jodie Goodwin and Lawrence House. Voters also rejected the re-election bid of Elizabeth Bullard, the chair of the MSAD 52 board, and elected Peter Ricker and Joanne Nickerson to the two seats on the school board.
