Town meeting voters agreed to cut back on road work and other capital improvements this year, leading to a $3.6 million budget, a 4.4 percent reduction from last year.
Town Manager Dwayne Morin said residents added $5,000 to the spending plan recommended by the Budget Committee to pay for a committee appreciation dinner that honors volunteers.
"They do a lot of good work for the town, and people wanted to recognize them for that," he said.
Cutting back on capital improvement spending, such as highway projects, saved enough money to avoid layoffs, Morin said, although a few seasonal part-time positions won't be filled this summer.
Morin said the meeting attracted about 150 people, who wrapped up voting on the budget and other items in about two hours, 15 minutes – the shortest town meeting in his 13 years' experience, he said.
Voters also chose two selectmen, Paul Danforth and Jay MacDougall, and elected Cynthia Roy to a seat on the MSAD 60 board of directors, Morin said.
