About 100 people approved an estimated $2 million municipal budget and voted to give town employees a 2 percent raise Saturday.

Town Clerk Andy Bors said residents voted 47-23 in support of the raise.

"Some felt that during these tough economic times, we shouldn't get a raise. I am surprised they voted for it," Bors said, noting the budget represents a slight decrease from last year. "The Budget Committee and Board of Selectmen worked really hard to have a lean budget."

Residents voted to raise $14,300 for programs for the Parks and Recreation Department; $5,000 to improve Brackett Hill Road; $5,500 to support Alfred Festival Day; $21,481 to support Parsons Memorial Library; and $56,800 for the Alfred Fire Department.

Bors said 943 residents voted during the election on Friday. The race for road commissioner and the seat on the Board of Selectmen drew people to the polls, he said.

"For a town meeting election, it was a very good turnout. I had to keep running back to print more ballots," Bors said.

Selectman John Sylvester was re-elected to the board by a 17-vote margin over his opponent, George Donovan, who received 456 votes. Bors said Donovan may ask for a recount.

"It only takes one vote," Sylvester said. "I have run in many closes races before. Now, we move on and do the town business to help keep the town financially secure and performing at a high level."

Jonathan Lord was elected road commissioner for a three-year term. He received 506 votes, while his opponent, Seth Coy, received 431 votes.

David Galbraith was elected to the board of directors for School Administrative District 57 with 511 votes. He ran against Anthony Palminteri, who received 345 votes.

Barbara Carlson was re-elected to the board of directors of the Parsons Memorial Library with 793 votes. Krista Okerholm was also elected to the board with seven votes.
