About 40 residents at the town meeting Saturday approved an estimated $687,929 municipal budget.

Selectman Robert Heard said the meeting went longer than usual because of a lengthy discussion about an amendment to the land use ordinance to establish a general development district.

Heard said any high-impact commercial and industrial development would have been allowed in the village district, but now will be allowed only in the general development district.

Also, a motorized vehicle racing facility that could have been built in the rural district will be allowed only in the general development district. Heard said residents approved the changes by a substantial majority.

"The general development district creates an appropriate location for high traffic and large building development," Heard said. "The village district doesn't have the land or the infrastructure to support that kind of volume or use."

Residents at the town meeting approved an estimated $687,929 municipal budget, about $3,300 less than what was proposed.

Residents voted to reduce the Sacopee Recreation Council's request for $4,500 to $3,000 and reduced a request from Tri County Mental Health Services for $3,000 to $1,500 because it didn't document how the money benefited Porter, Heard said.
