Residents at the town meeting Saturday approved an estimated $1.7 million municipal budget and elected Merton Howard and Linda Darling to the Board of Selectmen.

About 75 people turned out for the meeting, which was described by Town Clerk Kathleen Macy as smooth and productive.

"It was the most laid-back meeting I have been to in years," Macy said. "I thought it went great. People were interested, engaged and respectful."

Residents voted to amend two articles. They decided to raise an additional $500 to mow the Mullin's Head property and approved an additional $2,000 for mowing the town cemetery.

The budget decreased by slightly less than 1.5 percent over last year, said Town Administrator Joe Stone, noting that the town decided to put off a minor road repaving project until next year.

"The budget was premised on keeping it flat or reducing it somewhat. It sends an important message that the Budget Committee took their job seriously in this national and state economic climate," Stone said.

Howard and Darling were elected to three-year terms on the Board of Selectmen. They ran unopposed.

Karen Cooper was also elected to a three-year term on the board of directors for School Administrative District 7.
