Voters at Saturday's annual town meeting awarded a winter sand and snow-removal contract to Sam White Jr. and chose a new town clerk in morning elections.

The meeting, held at Embden Elementary School, drew about 75 people, according to former Town Clerk Amanda Morrill.

Morrill, who had held the town clerk's seat for two years, was ousted by Bonnie Baker, 77-60. Baker was re-elected to the treasurer's seat as well, defeating Morrill, 77-62.

Residents chose White over Dale Earle of New Portland by a show of hands. He was hired for a three-year contract.

The sanding and snow-removal bids were opened at the meeting and residents held a 10- to-15-minute discussion about it, according to Morrill.

White presented bids of $238,400 for 2009-2010, $239,400 for 2010-2011 and $244,400 for 2011-2012, Morrill said.

Earle's bids were $220,000 for 2009-2010, $225,000 for 2010-2011 and $230,000 for 2011-2012, she said.

In other elections, Wayne McLaughlin was elected selectman with 113 votes, replacing Edwin Thebarge, who chose not to seek re-election; Road Commissioner Michael Witham was re-elected with 127 votes; assessor Thebarge was re-elected; write-in candidate Shawn Cyrway was elected to the School Administrative District 74 board of directors; and tax collector Ramona McLaughlin was re-elected.
