Class C: Calais edges Dirigo for its third boys' state championship in four years, and Jay beats George Stevens for its first girls' title.
From staff reports February 28, 2009

BANGOR — Cal Shorey hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining Saturday night to give Calais a 40-39 win over Dirigo in the Class C boys’ basketball state championship game at the Bangor Auditorium.

It’s the third state championship in four years for Calais (17-4), which lost to Winthrop in last year’s state final.

Dirigo (20-2) had taken a 38-37 lead on a jumper by Nic Crutchfield with just under two minutes remaining, and Tom Knight sank 1 of 2 free throws to make it 39-37 with just over a minute left.

Shorey then misfired on a 3-point attempt, but Dirigo’s Tyler Gates was fouled and missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

Shorey followed with his winning 3-pointer. Knight, Dirigo’s 6-foot-8 senior center, missed a short turnaround jumper and Calais grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Shorey finished with 16 points to pace the Blue Devils. Knight had 20 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots for Dirigo.

CLASS C GIRLS: Liz LeBlanc sank the go-ahead jumper with 35 seconds remaining, and Jay scored the final seven points to capture its first girls’ basketball state championship with a 44-38 victory over George Stevens.

LeBlanc’s shot gave Jay a 39-38 lead, and the Tigers made 5 of 6 free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win.

LeBlanc and Mallory Bonnevie each scored 12 points and Hillary Deane had 11 for Jay (19-4). Alida Peake finished with 14 points for George Stevens (18-4).
