WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, issued the following statement on the inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States:
“The inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States represents a historic moment for our nation. While this day’s place in our history is significant, so too are the challenges that we face.
"I am optimistic that our country can come together following this day and truly work in the best interests of our future. It is only together that we can accomplish the great things required of us.“Some of the most important presidential speeches have been delivered on Inauguration Day. In 1961, John F. Kennedy famously called for Americans to 'ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country.' At his 1933 inauguration, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared that the 'only thing we have to fear is fear itself.'
"President Barack Obama’s words today were uplifting and appropriate given the times that we are in. It was an inauguration for all Americans. I look forward to working with our new president. We have a lot to do and I’m ready to get to work.”
