Pirates lose to Wolf Pack, 3-2
Dane Byers' overtime goal lifted the Hartford Wolf Pack to a 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates on Wednesday night at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
Portland's Colin Murphy got his first goal of the year from Chris Butler and Marek Zagrapan on a power play 8:18 into the first period, but Dale Weise and Justin Soryal answered for Hartford, giving the Wolf Pack a 2-1 lead after one period.
Despite an 11-3 advantage in shots in the second period, the Pirates (4-1-1-0) were unable to score until 8:11 into the third when Nathan Gerbe tied it on a power play on assists from Tim Kennedy and Mike Kostka. It was Gerbe's sixth of the season.
Portland was held without a shot in the overtime.
• Before Wednesday night's game, defenseman Matt MacDonald and center Aaron Slattengren were added to the Portland roster.
"They will give us some depth and some quality people," Portland Coach Kevin Dineen said.
MacDonald had a goal and four assists in four games with the Cincinnati Cyclones before signing a professional tryout contract with the Pirates. He had two assists while playing in 22 AHL games last season with the Rockford IceHogs.
Slattengren had three assists in five games for Portland in 2006. Last season, he had 10 goals and 13 assists in 32 games for the Providence Bruins.
