her mind, 391 felt her comments were not appropriate, and 218 did not feel strongly either way.

Bloggers on both sides of the political aisle said Collins' comments about Edwards were good fodder for Internet chatter, but represent mere fluff compared with the important issues of the campaign.

"I really don't care what she thinks about John Edwards, I'm more concerned about the other stuff," such as Collins' position on offshore drilling and tax breaks for the oil industry, said Gerald Weinand, who lives in Rockland and runs the blog turnmaineblue.com. The site backs Allen and other Democratic candidates.

Scott Fish, owner and editor of asmainegoes.com, said Collins' comments attracted almost no attention on his site.

Fish created the site in 1998 to "promote interactive conservative opinion" in Maine.

"I thought her remark about John Edwards was probably what the greater majority of Americans were thinking anyway," Fish said. "Maine voters are more concerned about how they're going to afford heating oil this winter than they are about Sen. Collins' comments."
