Kenyans sweep Beach to Beacon

Scarborough's Kristin Barry sets a Maine women's record.

CAPE ELIZABETH -- A record 5,000-plus runners completed the 11th TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K this morning, crossing the finish line into fog-shrouded Fort Williams Park.Kenyan Ed Muge won the overall title in 27 minutes, 52.4 seconds, followed by Ethopian Maregu Zewdie in 27:53 and Kenyan Kiplimo Kimutai in 27:59.Edith Masai of Kenya won the elite women's title, running the course in 31:57. Russian Liudmila Biktasheva finished second in 32:04 and Japan's Yuri Kano was third in 32:17.

Scarborough's Kristin Barry, 34, set a record in the Maine women's division, finishing in 34:38, followed by training partner Sheri McCarthy-Piers, 37, of Falmouth, who finished second in 34:48. South Portland's Carry Buterbaugh, 36, was third in 36:46.Ben True, 22, of North Yarmouth paced the Maine men's field, winning his first title in the division in 31:02. Bar Harbor's Judson Cake, 30, finished second in the division in 31:49, and Falmouth's Jon Wilson, 20, was third in 31:51.
