Bowdoin College and the University of Maine School of Law held commencement ceremonies Saturday, with 448 graduates receiving degrees from Bowdoin and 71 law students graduating at UMaine.

Retired judge Frank M. Coffin, the law school keynote speaker, encouraged graduates to employ a range of skills and live up to the highest ethical standards as lawyers, but also "save time for yourself and family."

Coffin was appointed to the First Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1965. He served as chief judge from 1972 to 1983 and retired in 2006.

At Bowdoin, graduates Nathan Reuben Chaffetz and Vanessa Lisbeth Vidal Castellanos were chosen to give commencement addresses. Chaffetz encouraged his fellow graduates to be open-minded and tolerant: "If we can't accept each other here, how do we expect to bring this mind-set to the worldwide stage?"
