AUGUSTA — Courtney Cochran scored 21 points and keyed a third-quarter surge as Woodland pulled away for a 59-45 win over previously undefeated Buckfield in the Class D girls’ basketball state championship game at the Augusta Civic Center.
Cochran, coming off a 33-point, 18-rebound performance in the Eastern Maine final, had 12 points in the first half to help the Dragons (20-3) build a 26-22 halftime lead. Woodland then opened the second half by making its first five shots. Cochran, a 6-foot senior, scored eight points during a 16-4 run that made it 42-26.
Buckfield (21-1) never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
It’s the second state championship in three years and fourth in eight years for Woodland. Buckfield hasn’t won a state title since 1990.
Ariel Knights and Rachel Torrey each finished with 10 points for Woodland. Lindsay Henderson and Alyssa Henderson paced the Bucks with 11 points apiece.
