EASTER IS March 23 this year. I know because I looked at my desk calendar. Or I could have entered the year at U.S. Naval Observatory's Ash Wednesday/Easter calculator. Or I could have used the Date of Easter Algorithm which is also available on the USNO's page that explains how the date of Easter is set.

IT IS IMPORTANT to have some advance warning about Easter for many reasons, some profound and some frivolous. Falling somewhere in between is the matter of Easter eggs. Real Easter eggs -- not plastic or chocolate -- take a little time.

FIRST YOU have to find white eggs, which in Maine is harder than in some other states. Then you need to plan, collect the dyes and stay calm when you crack, smudge and drop egg after egg (and you thought the Easter algorithm was hard!)

A GREAT SITE with egg templates, natural dyes, and different techniques is the American Egg Board's. For insanely beautiful and intricate eggs learn pysanky -- the Eastern European tradition of decorating.
