From staff reports February 3, 2008

Gov. John Baldacci, Patriots, 34-24: Warmer weather is better for offense, Brady's ankle is rested, and most importantly, history is waiting to be made. The Patriots' 2007-2008 team is the best in NFL history.

Cindy Blodgett, UMaine women's basketball coach, Patriots, 28-20: I heard that the average Super Bowl score was 20-17. Having Tom Brady is like a plus-8. That's my method.

Susan Collins, Maine U.S. senator, Patriots, 19-0: It's time for the 1972 Dolphins to put their champagne back in the rack! The New England Patriots will be remembered as the best team in NFL history. The fourth Super Bowl victory in seven years and the best looking quarterback in the NFL, who could ask for anything more?

Rep. Tom Allen, Patriots, 32-17: The Patriots will make history completing a 19-0 season. They will win as they have all season because they play as a team. As my friend, former House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri, told me after the Patriots' 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, 'When the Patriots chose to be announced as a team, not individually, I knew they would win the game.'

Kevin Thomas, Maine Sunday Telegram sports writer, Patriots, 27-13: The extra week has stolen the Giants' momentum. New England has too much offensive might.

Bob Smyth, Press Herald/Sunday Telegram sports copy editor, Patriots, 34-17: Eli's coming, but he ain't there yet. Brady? Been there, done that.

House Speaker Glenn Cummings, D-Portland (after consulting with son Kiernan, the football expert in his family), Patriots, 24-10: The Patriots' running game will be a surprise, keeping the Giants' defense off balance, and will ensure that Tom Brady reaches his full potential with his ready receivers."

Paul Abramowitz, Maine Sunday Telegram sports slot editor, Giants, 23-20: In a cruel twist of fate, the Patriots have a late TD called back by a video review. Live by the video, die by the video.

Genie O'Brien, artistic and executive director of Portland Ballet, Patriots, 28-17: It's going to be a good game, but an indulgent game to watch. The Patriots have 20 players with Super Bowl experience. They're seasoned pros. They'll start out slowly, assess the situation and then come on strong, reflecting their finishing power."

Jay Baltes, Press Herald/Sunday Telegram sports assistant editor, Patriots, 41-20: Dome conditions will play to the Pats' strengths and expose the Giants' mediocrity.

Jack Cosgrove, UMaine football coach, Patriots, 31-24: The Giants, Jacksonville and San Diego. Those have really been the tests for the Patriots. They stood up to them and found a way to win, either shutting them down or moving the football in a way that was not typical. Like it seems to be in the last month or so, the Patriots will pull away, separate themselves in the second half.

Hal Madsen, Press Herald/Sunday Telegram sports copy editor, Giants, 28-27: The game ends when Stephen Gostkowski turns into Scott Norwood instead of Adam Vinatieri.

Senate President Beth Edmonds, D-Freeport, Patriots, 24-17: I hope the Patriots win. I think it's something we all can agree on, regardless of political party.

Greg Reid, Press Herald/Sunday Telegram sports copy editor, Patriots, 38-35: Bill Belichick stoically proclaims the 2007 season is over, everyone's at 0-0 and he's looking forward to getting back to work. MVP...
