Maine's Teacher of the Year offers a reminder of the good work done in every school.
September 17, 2007
— For Martin McKeon, it was Mrs. Schultz. The former third- grade teacher, who died in 2001, inspired her young student, gave him an idea of what he could do and made him want to do more.

Now McKeon, Maine's 2008 Teacher of the Year, is inspiring his ninth-grade students at Sanford High School, teaching them about world history and making them want to do more.

McKeon was the one holding the Teacher of the Year plaque this year, but as he could tell you, there are many other deserving teachers doing important work around the state. When school budgets are the education stories that often fill the news, McKeon's award reminds us of what we are paying for, and what we have learned about him reflects well on his colleagues.

McKeon reaches beyond his textbook to engage his students. He structures his course to end with a "World History Exhibition" in which student projects are displayed and scored by fellow students, alumni and teachers. Exhibits from previous years crowd his shelves.

McKeon maintains ties with former students, asking some sophomores to be student interns. He helps upperclassmen with college applications and financial aid forms. Outside class, he has led the school's Pep Club, and served as grand marshal of the prom for 14 years.

Just as McKeon benefited from having Mrs. Schultz, 23 years- worth of Sanford High School freshmen have benefited from their time in his classroom.

McKeon's award gives the rest of us a chance to reflect on the good work being done for Maine children, and the gifts we receive from the teachers in our lives.
