Then the friend asked Page if she wanted to join the team.
"I originally told her 'Absolutely not. You're out of your mind,'" she said.
After all, roller derby had been practically unheard-of for decades. It seemed like a bruise-and-tumble type of sport. And they were looking for volunteers?
Clearly things have changed for Page, who goes by Miss Creant, No. 44, in the Maine Roller Derby.
It's been over a year since the Maine Roller Derby was formed, starting with a small nucleus of women to upward of 35 skaters today.
On Saturday they hold their first bout of the fall season at the Portland Expo against the Hudson (N.Y.) Valley Horror. Tickets are available at Bull Moose and information is available at Mainerollerderby.com.
Page, 34, said she was inspired by the enthusiastic group wanting to revive the sport here in Maine. Though it had been a while since she had played a team sport, she was looking for a challenge.
Page said she enjoys the camaraderie and the chance to meet new people. At the same time, spending a few hours a week throwing blocks and speeding around a rink also has its advantages, she said.
"(The team) get their aggressions out," she said. "It's like therapy twice a week."
Page said the biggest misconception about the derby is that it is all staged similar to professional wrestling. It's all very, very real, she said.
It's been a great experience overall and she's excited for the matches this fall, but Page said one of the more interesting aspects has been explaining what she does to family and friends.
"They don't know what to think of it at first. They think it's really strange or really cool," she said.
Here are some of Page's favorite Web sites:
Sockdreams -- www.sockdreams.com: "This is where all the derby girls go to get socks for practices and bouts. I love this company because they are reasonably priced, you receive your socks in about two days, and there are never any shipping fees."
Craigslist -- www.craigslist.org: "It's like local eBay! You can sell your old stuff or buy items from people right in your area. You can look for apartments (and see pictures of the apartments) and jobs. Plus, you can find some pretty funny writing on Craigslist. Check out the 'best-of-craigslist' section!"
About.com -- www.about.com: "This site has a great deal of information about a wide variety of topics. Choose one of the 'channels' and start exploring."
Liberal Oasis -- www.liberaloasis.com: "A political Web site coming from the left. It contains links to other political Web sites, politically inclined blogs, and delivers the latest news in politics."
Maine Roller Derby -- www.mainerollerderby.com: "My favorite Web site, by far. This Web site contains all the information you could ever want on Maine's first and only women's flat-track roller derby league. You can find information on upcoming games and events, as well as the history of Maine Roller Derby."
