The Portland School Committee has postponed a yearly retreat that was scheduled for Tuesday.

The daylong goal-setting session was to be held at the Abromson Community Center at the University of Southern Maine.

The retreat likely will be rescheduled in December, following the Nov. 6 elections, said Sue Ward, secretary to Superintendent Mary Jo O`Connor.

Three seats on the nine-member committee are up for grabs: the District 3 slot and two at-large positions. Several potential candidates have taken out nomination papers.

The committee is wrestling with fallout from an estimated $2.5 million deficit in the $82 million school budget that ended June 30.

Since then, School Finance Director Richard Paulson has resigned, O`Connor has admitted her lack of financial expertise and some have called for her resignation.
