Hiram resident found dead after crashing dirt bike

The body of a 28-year-old Hiram man who had been missing since last week was found here Wednesday.

A passer-by discovered Richard Lewis` body under some shrubs near Boothby Road, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a written statement.

McCausland said Lewis, missing since Friday, apparently died after crashing his dirt bike, which was found nearby. No autopsy had been scheduled Wednesday.

Local man gets 26 months as 'straw purchaser' of guns

A Windham man was sentenced to more than two years in federal prison Wednesday for acting as a "straw purchaser" of handguns, U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby announced.

Adam J. DeCicco, 27, bought and completed paperwork for six handguns last year on behalf of another person, Silsby said in a statement.

DeCicco bought the guns from the same dealer over a period of about three weeks. Each time, he lied on federal firearms and explosives forms and said he was the actual buyer of the handguns, court documents show.

DeCicco pleaded guilty in February to three counts of making false statements on firearms paperwork, all felonies. He was sentenced to 26 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

NORTH YARMOUTH

Crash sends Falmouth driver to hospital, destroys vehicle

Police are investigating a car crash on Route 115 that hospitalized a Falmouth woman Wednesday night.

The 52-year-old woman, whose name was not released immediately after the accident, was driving south on Route 115 when her car drifted out of its lane, police said. She overcorrected, and her PT Cruiser rolled over and came to a rest in the woods near the intersection with Haskell Road around 7:19 p.m., said Trooper Leonard Bolton.

Bolton said the car was destroyed, but its airbags deployed and the woman was wearing her seatbelt. She was taken to Maine Medical Center as a precautionary measure, he said.
