Class A games rescheduled
The MPA has rescheduled the Class A state title games because of the snowstorm expected for Saturday.
The Class A girls championship between Deering and Oxford Hills has been rescheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
The Class A boys championship between Cheverus and Bangor has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Final: Cheverus 40 , Thornton 31

Cheverus is headed back to the Class A state final after a five-year absence after beating Thornton Academy, 40-31, to win the Western Maine Class A boys' basketball title Saturday night at the Civic Center.
The No. 1-ranked Stags will play Bangor next Saturday night at 9 at the Civic Center for the state title. It will be a rematch of the 2003 final won by Bangor, 48-43.
In one of the lowest scoring boys' regional finals, Cheverus (18-3) clamped down its defense to shut down Thornton's offense. The Stags scored their last seven points from the line.
Ian Barwize led Cheverus with 12 points, including a key three-points in the fourth quarter. Kory Martin led TA with 13 points as the Golden Trojans only offensive answer to the Stags' strong defense.
Thornton was trying to win the school's first regional title in basketball.

Cheverus started quickly in the quarter with a couple of fastbreak layups. Mick DiStasio scored first and then Indiana Faithful. that scored brought a timeout from thornton and it seemed to work as the Golden Trojans got going.

Ian Barwize hit a shot from the corner at the buzzer to give Cheverus a 3-point lead. Points were scarce in the first half as defense took front and center. The Stags playing their traditional matchup zone while the Golden Trojans played a man-to-man.
Thornton got the ball into center Kory Martin, who responded with a team high nine points.
Barwize led the Stags with eight points.
Thornton is bidding for the school's first regional title while Cheverus is looking to get back to the state final for the first time in five years.

A slow start to the boys' Western maine final as both teams came out cold. Wil White came off the bench to spark the Stags with five points. Dakota Greene had four for Thornton.
FINAL: Deering 53, Noble 39
Top-ranked Deering had too much defense and too many scorers, pulling away from No.3 Noble early and easing to its second Class A West championship in five years.
Nicole Garland led Deering with 16 points while Diana Manduca had 15. Manduca had 12 in the first half, when Deering opened a 16-point lead.
Deering had a 15-point lead several times in the fourth quarter.
Noble was led by Sloane Sorrell with 12 and Margaret Burns with 10.
Deering (19-2) will play Oxford Hills in the state championship game next Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland.
Third quarter: Deering 41-30
Noble picked up its defensive intensity and got the ball inside to Sloane Sorrell and pulled within nine several times in the third quarter.
Sorrell had 10 points in the quarter.
But Deering always responded. Claire Ramonas scored inside to maintain an 11-point lead, then Nichoe Garland, who had seven of Noble's nine points in teh quarter, hit two foul shots to make it 41-30 entering the fourth.
Second quarter: Deering 32-16
Deering completed dominated the second quarter, opening with an 18-2 run that put the Rams safely into the lead.
Deering's biggest lead in the second quarter was 19 points, which the Rams achieved twice.
Defense was again a factor, as the Rams never let Noble's top scorer, Sloane Sorrell, get the ball. She had just two shots in the first half, with no points.
Deering's scoring was balanced in the first half as Diana Manduca scored 12 points, Nicole Garland seven and Claire Ramonas five.
First quarter: Deering 16-9
Deering's defense completed dominated the first quarter as the Rams forced nine Noble turnovers and coach Kyle Keenan to call three time-outs.
Deering actually trailed 6-4 after Margaret Burns scored, then Diana Manduca took over, hitting two 3-pointers within 30 seconds of each other to make it 10-6.
She later stole a pass and scored to make it 14-6. Following an Alysssa Stokes' 3-pointer thant made it 14-9, Nicole Garland scored at the buzzer for a 16-9 Deering lead.

Cape Elizabeth won its first Western Maine Class B boys' basketball title in 20 years with a 57-50 win over Freeport Saturday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Center,
The top-ranked Capers will meet the Eastern Maine champion for the state title next Friday night at 9 at the Bangor Auditorium.
No. 6 Freeport (15-5) made a run, cutting it to four points twice in the fourth quarter, but Cape took advantage of being in the bonus at the free throw line and made six in the final minutes to hold off the Falcons, who misfired from the floor in the waning moments.
Alex Bowe led Cape (19-2) with 21 points while Andrew Dickey added 13 points. Cody Bartlett led Freeport.
Dickey, a sophomore, won the Pierre Harnois Trophy as the tourney MVP. Freeport was playing in its first regional final since 1970.

In a wide open second quarter, Cape's offense was on fire as the Capers scored at will and built their lead to 10 points. Alex Bowe led Cape with nine points in the quarter.
Freeport, though, may have gotten a boost heading into overtime when Jon Klages, held scoreless, hit a 3-point at the buzzer. The Capers led 33-22 after a basket by Bowe, but Klages 3-point cut it to eight and may have given Freeport some confidence.

Cape Elizabeth jumped out to a 13-5 lead as Andrew Dickey found the range. Freeport rebounded and closed the quarter, by outscoring the Capers 6-2.
Dickey had five points in the quarter while Tom Markelon had four points for Freeport.
FINAL: Lake Region 37, Falmouth 33
Final:
Senior Renee Nicholas hit four foul shots in the final 24 seconds as top-seeded Lake Region won its third consecutive Class B West girls championship, holding off No.2 Falmouth 37-33.
The Lakers trailed after one period but took control with an 8-0 run to close out the second quarter.
In the fourth, the Lakers scored only seven points, but Nicholas had five of them - all at the line.
With Lake Region leading 33-30, she hit two foul shots with 24 seconds left.
Falmouth's Morgan Furman hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to bring her team within two. But Nicholas hit two more foul shots with 6.3 seconds left to seal it.
Nicholas led the Lakers (19-2) with 12 points. Furman led Falmouth (18-3) with 11.
Third quarter: Lake Region 30-24
Lake Region's defense really clamped down in the third quarter, holding Falmouth to just five points as the Lakers extended their lead to six entering the final quarter.
Lake Region's Abby Hancock opened the third by hitting a 3-pointer. Krysti Leach and Renee Nicholas followed with baskets as the Lakers opened a 28-19 lead.
Falmouth's Andrea Doyle hit a 3-pointer to bring the Yachtsmen within 28-22, but they would get no closer.
Lake Region 21, Falmouth 19 (half):
Lake Region scored the final eight points of the second quarter, including an NBA-3 pointer by sophomore Meghan Craffey with 10 seconds left, to take a halftime advantage.
The Yachtsmen had led 19-13 on a Paige Wyman layup, only to have Lake Region's defense force three turnovers and two missed shots.
Craffey had eight points in the quarter, including two 3's.
In the first quarter, second-ranked Falmouth, which lost twice to Lake Region in the regular season, controlled the tempo throughout.
The Yachtsmen got the first two baskets of the game, by Andrea Doyle and Haley Jordan, and never trailed.
Lake Region got within 10-6 on a last-second shot by sophomore Chelsea Meyers from the left corner.

Noble 40, South Portland 38, final
Alyssa Stokes hit a layup as time expired to give the Knights the win. The play was designed to go to Sloane Sorrell, but as time ran down and panic set in Alyssa Stokes cut to the basket for the score.
Sorrell scored 26 points to lead Noble and played the second half while in visible pain. Noble came back despite trailing 22-8 at halftime. Sorrell scored the Knights first 10 points, but in the third quarter the rest of the team came alive.
Brianna Hawkins led South Portland with 19 points, most around the low block, and Jess Aceto scored 10 for the Red Riots, including eight in the second quarter.
Noble will play Deering tomorrow for the Western A Championship.

The game was tied 13-13 at halftime, but the relentless double-teaming of ballhandlers by Deering evenutually wore down Westbrook, which scored just one point in the third quarter.
Cynthia Wescott led the Blue Blazes with 11 points.

Cynthia Wescott has nine points to lead Westbrook. The Blue Blazes have struggled against the Rams' traps, which have been both full and half court.

No. 6 Freeport knocked off No.2 Yarmouth to earn a trip to the regional final Saturday afternoon with an impresssive win in the Western Maine Class B boys' semifinals Thursday night at the Civic Center.
Freeport (15-5) withstood a furious rally by Yarmouth (16-4) in the fourth quarter.
Freeport will play top-ranked Cape Elizabeth for the Western Maine title at 3:45 p.m.
The Falcons made nine straight free throws and 13 out of 15 in the final 1:45 as yarmouth was forced to foul.
Reid Christian led Freeport with 19 points, all by six coming from the line. John Murphy led Yarmouth with 27 points.
Freeport 38, yarmouth 32 (end ofthird quarter)
After a slow start to the quarter, both teams went up and down the floor. Yarmouth made a couple of runs that Freeport answered. The Falcons five straight points near the end of the quarter, but Ben Groves scored inside for the Clippers.
Murphy stayed hot for Yarmouth with three baskets in the quarter.

John Murphy of Yarmouth had his team's first 10 points of the second quarter. After a scoreless first quarter, Murphy got hot and sparked the Clippers to within a point of Freeport, which led 13-6 after one.
But Reid Christian of Freeport heated up from the mid-point on of the quarter and led a spurt to close the quarter. Christian had eight points in the quarter. The Falcons closed the quarter with a 8-2 run to take a seven-point lead at halftime. Christian and Kyle Flash each had two baskets in the run. Joe Dilworth scored for Yarmouth on a breakaway at the buzzer.
Freeport 13, Yarmouth 6
Freeport got off to a quick start as the Falcons jumped out to a 6-2 lead. They stretched the lead to 10-4 as Tom Markelon and Jon Klages scored basket. John Arris came off the bench and hit a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter that made it 13-6 after one quarter.
FINAL: Lake Region 40, York 33
Lake Region used its senior experience in the final minutes to hold off a young York team and advance to the regional championship for the third consecutive year.
Leading by just three points, the Lakers got a basket from senior Krysti Leach, then a steal from senior Renee Nicholas. She passed to senior Erica Webb for a a layup and a 35-28 lead.
Sophomore Abby Hancock hit four consecutive foul shots in the final 24 seconds to secure the win.
Top-ranked Lake Region is now 18-2 and will face Falmouth at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Class B West title game.
In the third quarter, York played some exceptional defense, holding the Lakers to just four points. But Lake Region matched York's defensive intensity and still held a seven-point lead entering the fourth.
The Lakers began the third by getyting a layup from Morgan McClean for a 26-13 lead, their biggest of the game.
York's Stephanie Gallagher had five points in the third.
After falling behind by 12 points in the first quarter, York fought back to within four twice in the second quarter. But each time the Lakers responded.
A Haley Westman basket for York brought the Wildcats within 15-11 with 6:03 left in the half but the Lakers got a layup from Erica Webb and defensively forced four Wildcat misses.
After Brittany Bracy scored on a back-door layup with 2:32 remaining to make it 17-13, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run to close the half.
Renee Nicholas had two of the baskets, the first a twisting sneakaway layup and the other a drive left. Meghan Craffey hit her second 3-pointer of the game with 1:33 left in the half as well.
Both defenses were playing well: York had 15 turnovers in the first half, Lake Region 12.
Lake Region used its experience and defense to open a 10-point first quarter lead.
The Lakers forced eight York turnovers and the Wildcats, who start two freshmen and a sophomore, missed their first eight shots.
Lake Region had a 13-1 lead before York's Meredith Reid got the Wildcats' first field goal with 1:00 left in the quarter.
Senior Erica Webb had six of Lake Region's points while sophomore Meghan Craffey hit a 3-pointer.

No. 2 Falmouth outscored No. 6 Greely, 5-2, in overtime to hold off the Rangers for a 47-44 win in a Western maine Class B girls' semifinal Thursday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Falmouth (18-2) advances to its second straight regional final on Saturday when it will play either Lake Region or York.
Kelsey Graffram's only basket gave Falmouth a 44-42 to start overtime and the Yachtsmen stayed in front.

Falmouth and Greely headed to overtime at the Civic Center as Alison Derhagopian hit a layup at the buzzer to tie it at 40-40.
The ball hung momentarily on the rim before falling.

McDevitt hit two, 3-pointers in the third quarter to rally Greely which cut it to one point late in the quarter after trailing by seven points at halftime.
The Rangers outscored Falmouth, 14-11, in the quarter.
Falmouth recovered at the end of the quarter as Furman scored a basket and Haley Jordan had a free throw to make it a four-point margin.

Morgan Furman and Andrea Doyle combined for all but four of Falmouth's first half points as the No. 2 seed took control in the first half.
Furman led the Yachtsmen with 12 points while Doyle had nine. Doyle, a 5-foot-4 guard, got free under the basket for two baskets. Doyle also got fouled while shooting and sank five of 10 from the line.
Furman was a perfect 6 of 6 from the line. Falmouth, which beat the No. 4 Rangers twice during the regular season, caused several Greely turnovers with their halfcourt, double-teaming press.
Megan McDevitt led the Rangers with eight points in the first half. She hit a 3-pointer just before halftime to give Greely encouragement heading into the locker room.

Greely jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the strength of baskets by Shannon Cassidy and a 3-pointer by Megan McDevitt.
Falmouth charged back with eight unanswered points. Morgan Furman got Falmouth rolling with a basket and two free throws. Falmouth's halfcourt press bothered the Rangers.
Furman had eight of her team's 11 points. McDevitt had five points for the Rangers in the quarter.

Spenser Adams drove the lane for a basket with three seconds left in the period to put the Rangers back in front. Cape Elizabeth built its largest lead at 28-25 with 2:24 left but didn't score again in the period.

In a first half that was played without a timeout, the pace picked up considerably in the second quarter with both teams doing more penetrating against the man-to-man defenses. Cape Elizabeth took its first lead at 14-13 on a basket by Alex Bowe, then led by as much as 18-15. But Spenser Adams hit a 3-pointer for Greely, igniting an 8-2 run to end the half. Trevor Tierney, who has two fouls, leads Greely with eight points. Woody Tabery is high for the Capers with seven.

The Rangers scored the first four points, Cape Elizabeth the next four, and then Greely moved back ahead in a deliberate first quarter. Neither team showed an inclination to drive or even shoot 3-pointers.
Final: Cheverus 63, Portland 49
Cheverus will be in the Western Class A final against Thornton Academy after the convincing victory against Portland.
The Stags have taken control as DiStasio has now scored 22 points.
Cheverus built a 42-20 lead with 2:25 left in the period before Portland scored the final five points, including a 3-pointer by Joe Zukowski.
Cheverus' outside shooting is proving effective in the second half.
Four quick points puts Cheverus back in control leading to a timeout.

Mick DiStasio leads Cheverus at halftime with 12 points. Anthony Passmore and Jake Longstaff have seven each for Portland.
After Portland went ahead for the first time at 18-16 on two Ed Bogdanovich free throws, Cheverus regained command, again turning to defense.
With Portland leading 20-19, Cheverus ran off 10 straight points for a 29-20 lead, including seven straight points by Mick DiStasio, capped by a 3-pointer. Portland pulled back with 29-24 by scoring the final four points in the half, on four free throws in the final 5.5 seconds. Koang Thok hit two, then Mike Harmon two more after a steal.
Mike Harmon's 3-pointer with 5:17 left in the half has been the only scoring in a sloppy second period. Cheverus, which has called a timeout, has gone four minutes without scoring.
After Cheverus built a 15-5 lead, Portland's trapping defense began causing problems and the Bulldogs scored the final four points of the period. Jake Longstaff has five points and Mike Harmon the other four for Portland. Mick DiStasio had five points for Cheverus.
Cheverus takes early control with layups off turnovers. Portland is having a hard time getting good shots off the Cheverus matchup zone.

Dakota Greene and James Morse stepped up with their better-known teammates got into foul trouble, lifting second-seeded Thornton Academy into the Western Class A final with the victory against third-ranked South Portland.
Playing before an estimated 5,000 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center, Greene scored 20 points and Morse added 15 for the Trojans.
They especially stepped up in the second quarter, with center Kory Martin and point guard Jeff Winnie sidelined with foul trouble. The Trojans, trailing 18-16 with their two leaders on the bench, went on an 8-0 run and South Portland never caught up.
Winnie and Martin finished with 10 points each for the Trojans. Will Furbush scored 14 points and Keegan Hyland added 10 for South Portland.
Boys semifinals today
The action switches to the Cumberland County Civic Center today for three boys semifinals.
At 5:30 p.m., Thornton Academy meets South Portland in the first Western A semifinal. The Riots handed Thornton its first loss of the season during their only regular season meeting.
At 7 p.m., Cheverus plays Portland in the other Western A semifinal. The schools split two games during the regular season.
And at 8:30, Cape Elizabeth takes on Greely in a Western B semifinal. Greely won the first meeting between the schools early in the season; Cape beat the Rangers in double overtime in their second meeting, less than two weeks ago.

Hancock sank five free throws during the fourth period, and the Lakers converted nine as a team, to pull away from Wells.
Craffey led Lake Region with 12 points. Stevens scored 17 for Wells.
L.R. Has made six of eight free throws to hold off Wells.

Leading just 28-25 entering the final quarter, Falmouth got an offensive rebound from Kelsey Graffam, a jumper by Paige Wyman and a jumper by Haley Jordan to pull ahead by nine.
The Patriots would get no closer than seven.
Jordan led Falmouth with 11 points while Graffam had 10.
Rachel Clement led Gray with nine points.
Upstart Gray-New Gloucester pushed Falmouth hard in the third quarter, pulling to within three entering the final period.
Trailing 28-20, the Patriots got a 3-pointer from Mergan Dehetre and a breakaway layup by Teri-Lynn Sanborn to pull within 28-25.
Haley Jordan hit three jumpers in the second quarter to help Falmouth maintain its advantage.
The Falmouth defense was exceptional, forcing 18 Gray-New Gloucester turnovers in the first two quarters.
The Patriots got within four points twice early in the second quarter on baskets by Rachel Clement, the second after she stole the ball and dribbled three-quarters of the court for a layup.
But Jordan hit a jumper to make it 17-11 and regain the momentum for Falmouth. She later hit a jumper from the corner with 1:07 left in the quarter to provide Falmouth with its halftime advantage.
Second-ranked Falmouth controlled the tempo with its defense and rebounding in the first quarter. The Yachtsmen forced nine Gray-New Gloucester turnovers and got five offensive rebounds.

South Portland scored the first six points of the fourth period and cruised into the regional semifinals. Leading by eight entering the final eight minutes, the Riots got a fastbreak layup from Danielle McCusker and two inside hoops by Brianna Hawkins to open a 44-30 lead that Biddeford could not overcome.
Hawkins, Kelsey Flaherty and Erin Stilphen combined to dominate the inside for the Riots, who will play at 8:30 p.m. Friday against Noble.
Hawkins led the Riots (16-3) with 12 points while Jessica Aceto had 11 and Stilphen 10.
Keila Grigware led Biddeford (13-7) with 10 points while Lauren Rousseau had nine.
Danielle McCusker's 15-footer at the thid-quarter buzzer allowed the Riots to hold a comfortable margin entering the final quarter.
Biddeford had twice cut the margin to six, but South Portland's defense never let the Tigers closer.
South Portland opened up a 15-point lead in the second quarter as Biddeford was held scoreless for the first 4:41 of the period.
But Biddeford's Lauren Rousseau scored nine of the Tigers' next 11 points to bring Biddeford back to within 26-18 with 1:28 remaining in the half.
After SP's Brianna Hawkins hit a foul shot with 54 seconds left, the Tigers slowed the pace down and got a huge basket as Aimee Mortenson hit a fade-away jumper from the foul line at the buzzer to bring Biddeford within 27-20 at the half.
Jessica Aceto had nine points for the Riots, while Hawkins had eight. Rousseau led Biddeford with nine.
South Portland used a superior height advantage to control the boards at both ends of the court and open a big lead over Biddeford.

Jeffrey Winnie's 3-point shot from deep in the right corner with nine seconds left in the game gave the Trojans a 41-40 lead. Dominic Borelli's shot at the buzzer for Westbrook rolled around the rim and out, and Thornton advances.
Winnie and Martin scored 10 each for Thornton. Borelli scored 21 for the Blazes.

Despite a stilted pace of play due to turnovers and fouls by both sides, Portland has managed to stay within range due to contributions from a variety players. An offensive rebound followed by a lay-up from Dewayne Albertie and two points from six different players constituted Portland's offense.
Abwoch has cooled off a bit, but still leads all scorers with 13 points after a pretty runner.

Ronald Abwoch scored six points in the second, including a show-stopping spin move that resulted in a lay-up and free-throw attempt, to boost Deering's lead further. Abwoch is the game's leading scorer with 11 points. Kyle Donovan finishes the first half with four points and two blocks.
Portland benefitted from a press at times but has had difficulty penetrating and getting inside. Koang Thok continues to play well and has eight points at halftime and a couple of key steals, including one at 2:54 in the second that resulted in a breakaway lay-us. Ed Bogdoanovich has four points for Portland.
