Ian Barwise hit a big 3-pointer that started a late game run that carried Thornton Academy to its first state basketball championship with a 54-52 win over Edward Little High before 4,600 fans Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
Barwise, who played for Cheverus' state champions last year, finished with 17 points. Thornton (19-3) outscored Edward Little (19-3) 16-13 in the fourth quarter.
With the Golden Trojans trailing 43-42, Barwise's basket started an 11-3 surge that gave them a 53-46 lead with only seconds remaining. Corey Therriault broke up the run with a 3-pointer from the side, but the Red Eddies hurt themselves with two intentional fouls and a technical foul in the final 30 seconds.
morse finished with 14 points. Therriault led the Eddies with 21 points.
Edward Little was playing in its first Class A state final in 52 years while Thornton was playing in its first state final ever.

Thornton Academy closed tbhe quarter with an 8-0 run as James Morse finally hit from outside with a 3-pointer.
Morse came alive with seven points in the quarter after scorinign only two points in the first half.
Thornton turned up its intensity on defense and on the boards.

With the score tied at 21-21, Edward Little ran off eight straight points. The Eddies got open inside as Corey Therriault and James Philbrook each had two baskets in the spurt. The Eddies controlled the boards in the quarter.
Therriault had 13 points in the half while Ian Barwise had 12 for the Golden Trojans in the first half.
Barwise picked up his second foul midway in the quarter and didn't return. James Morse, held to two points in the first half, collected his third foul with 2:44 remaining.
Philbrook had eight rebounds and four assists in the first half.

Corey Therriault scored nine points for Edward Little while Ian Barwise of Thornton Academy also had nine points.
Therriault's 3-pointer gave the Red Eddies the quarter lead.
