FINAL: Lake Region 37, Falmouth 33
Final:
Senior Renee Nicholas hit four foul shots in the final 24 seconds as top-seeded Lake Region won its third consecutive Class B West girls championship, holding off No.2 Falmouth 37-33.
The Lakers trailed after one period but took control with an 8-0 run to close out the second quarter.
In the fourth, the Lakers scored only seven points, but Nicholas had five of them - all at the line.
With Lake Region leading 33-30, she hit two foul shots with 24 seconds left.
Falmouth's Morgan Furman hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to bring her team within two. But Nicholas hit two more foul shots with 6.3 seconds left to seal it.
Nicholas led the Lakers (19-2) with 12 points. Furman led Falmouth (18-3) with 11.
Third quarter: Lake Region 30-24
Lake Region's defense really clamped down in the third quarter, holding Falmouth to just five points as the Lakers extended their lead to six entering the final quarter.
Lake Region's Abby Hancock opened the third by hitting a 3-pointer. Krysti Leach and Renee Nicholas followed with baskets as the Lakers opened a 28-19 lead.
Falmouth's Andrea Doyle hit a 3-pointer to bring the Yachtsmen within 28-22, but they would get no closer.
Lake Region 21, Falmouth 19 (half):
Lake Region scored the final eight points of the second quarter, including an NBA-3 pointer by sophomore Meghan Craffey with 10 seconds left, to take a halftime advantage.
The Yachtsmen had led 19-13 on a Paige Wyman layup, only to have Lake Region's defense force three turnovers and two missed shots.
Craffey had eight points in the quarter, including two 3's.
In the first quarter, second-ranked Falmouth, which lost twice to Lake Region in the regular season, controlled the tempo throughout.
The Yachtsmen got the first two baskets of the game, by Andrea Doyle and Haley Jordan, and never trailed.
Lake Region got within 10-6 on a last-second shot by sophomore Chelsea Meyers from the left corner.
