No. 6 Freeport knocked off No.2 Yarmouth to earn a trip to the regional final Saturday afternoon with an impresssive win in the Western Maine Class B boys' semifinals Thursday night at the Civic Center.
Freeport (15-5) withstood a furious rally by Yarmouth (16-4) in the fourth quarter.
Freeport will play top-ranked Cape Elizabeth for the Western Maine title at 3:45 p.m.
The Falcons made nine straight free throws and 13 out of 15 in the final 1:45 as yarmouth was forced to foul.
Reid Christian led Freeport with 19 points, all by six coming from the line. John Murphy led Yarmouth with 27 points.
Freeport 38, yarmouth 32 (end ofthird quarter)
After a slow start to the quarter, both teams went up and down the floor. Yarmouth made a couple of runs that Freeport answered. The Falcons five straight points near the end of the quarter, but Ben Groves scored inside for the Clippers.
Murphy stayed hot for Yarmouth with three baskets in the quarter.
Freeport 27, Yarmouth 20 (halftime)
John Murphy of Yarmouth had his team's first 10 points of the second quarter. After a scoreless first quarter, Murphy got hot and sparked the Clippers to within a point of Freeport, which led 13-6 after one.
But Reid Christian of Freeport heated up from the mid-point on of the quarter and led a spurt to close the quarter. Christian had eight points in the quarter. The Falcons closed the quarter with a 8-2 run to take a seven-point lead at halftime. Christian and Kyle Flash each had two baskets in the run. Joe Dilworth scored for Yarmouth on a breakaway at the buzzer.
Freeport 13, Yarmouth 6
Freeport got off to a quick start as the Falcons jumped out to a 6-2 lead. They stretched the lead to 10-4 as Tom Markelon and Jon Klages scored basket. John Arris came off the bench and hit a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter that made it 13-6 after one quarter.
