FINAL: Cape boys 72, Wells 35

Cape Elizabeth 72, Wells 35

Top-ranked Cape Elizabeth, as expected, breezed to a Western Maine Class B boys' quarterfinal win over No. 8 Wells, , Saturday afternoon at the Portland Expo.

The Capers (17-2) will play No. 4 Greely (13-6) in the semifinal round next Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Guard Tom Ray led the well-balanced attack with 13 points. Shaine Burks came off the bench to add 10 points.

The Capers have won 14 straight. Demitrios Gatzogiannis led Wells with 15 points.

Cape 52, Wells 26 (end of three quarters)
It was more of the same in the third as Cape worked its offense with little opposition from Wells.
Cape stretched its lead to 30 on a 3-point play by Ray at the end of the quarter. Cape outscored the Warriors, 12-6, in the quarter. Andrew Dickey and Ray each had three points in the quarter.


Cape Elizabeth 40, Wells 20 (halftime)
Cape the second quarter with 12-0 run. Burks had eight of the 12 points as he got free inside. The Capers outscored Wells 20-10 in the second quarter, the same margin as in the opening quarter.
Tom Ray contributed three baskets in the second quarter. The Capers' fullcourt press continued to bother Wells.
Wells 6-foot-7 center Demitrios Gatzogiannis led his team with nine points in the first half.


Cape Elizabeth 28, Wells 10 (5:54 second)
Shaine Burks scored the first three baskets and Ray added a basket as the Capers assumed total control.


Cape Elizabeth 20, Wells 10 (end of first quarter)
Cape closed the opening period with four straight points to lead 20-10. Woody Tabery came off the bench to spark the Capers with six points. Cape's fullcourt press caused numerous Wells turnovers.
