4 starters; 1 earned run
While Brad Penny was putting together a quality start (6 IP, 3 ER), the Red Sox minor league starters were turning in gems.
All four teams won: Pawtucket 1-0, Portland 3-1, Salem 2-0 and Greenville 9-0.
Clay Buchholz got the start for the PawSox and is looking more and more major league ready (a good thing with John Smoltz's comeback bumped back).
Buchholz retired the first 9 batters and pitched 5 2/3 (2 H, 2 BB, 6 K). His ERA dipped to 1.80.
Jose Vaquedano (1.35) relieved for 2 IP (1 H, 2 K).
In the Pawtuvket game, outfielder Mark Kotsay, on a rehab assignment, had to leave the game with a strained calf.
Portland's Adam Mills (6.20) picked up his first Double-A win (7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 5 K) ... T.J. Large (0.79) got the save by striking out the only batter he faced.
Jon Still (.281) hit his third home run.
Salem starter Jose Capellan (3.75) went 6 IP (3 H, 2 BB, 5 H) ... Derrick Loop (0.90 ) got his second save (1 IP, 1 K) ... Loop, 25, signed out of the independent leagues last year, seems destined for a promotion to Portland.
Ryan Kalish (.289) homered for Salem ... Shortstop Kris Negron (.276) was 3-for-4.
Greenville's Casey Kelly (0.70), last year's top pick by the Red Sox, keep on rolling. He went 5 2/3 (2 H, 1 BB, 4 K).
Ryan Dent (.298) had three doubles for the Drive.
