Remembering Van Every when
Jonathan Van Every hit the game-winning home run in the 10th inning for the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night. Hadlock fans have known about Van Every's power for some time.
Van Every, who hit 27 home runs for the Akron Aeros in 2005, hit two homers in the Eastern League All-Star Game that year, at Hadlock Field.
Like they do with every minor league opponent, the Red Sox kept a file on Van Every. They apparently liked what they saw, offering him a 40-man roster spot last year when the Indians did not re-sign him.
For the past two days, well-respected reporter Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal spent two days at Hadlock Field. His story on Arnie Beyeler and the Sea Dogs' ways of doing things is in today's ProJo.
Elsewhere in the minors, Kris Johnson had a second straight tough start for Pawtucket, lasting only 4 2/3 innings (5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 6 K).
The PawSox relievers did fine with Jose Vaquedano going 1 1/3 (1K), and Daniel Bard pitching 2 frames (1 H, 1 BB, 4 K). Vaquedano has a 1.59 ERA. Bard's ERA is 1.42, and he has 22 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings.
In low Class A Greenville, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielder Mitch Dening continue to shine. Rizzo went (.320) went 1-for-3 with two walks. In 20 games, he has 14 walks and a .422 on-base percentage (to go along with his .507 slugging average). Rizzo is 19.
Dening, 20, is batting .319 after going 3-for-5 with two doubles.
