They began last year at Hadlock
Justin Masterson, Hunter Jones and Michael Bowden were hanging around Hadlock Field this time last year.
On Sunday, they combined to beat the Yankees 4-1.
Masterson started (5 1/3 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K)
Jones finished the sixth inning (O H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K)
Bowden came in for 2 IP (0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K)
Takashi Saito (no Sea Dogs connection) pitched the last inning for the save.
Another former Sea Dogs player is getting a lot of publicity from the game. Jacoby Ellsbury's steal of home was one of the highlights of the sweep of the Yankees.
Bowden will now go back to Pawtucket. Shortstop Julio Lugo (who went 2-for-6 as the PawSox DH on Sunday) re-joins the major league team.
In Portland, the Sea Dogs lost 20-15.
Portland has the second-worst ERA (5.04) in the Eastern League. Part of the problem is that two starters (Ryne Lawson and Travis Beazley) are on the DL and are being replaced by relievers.
Overall, few are performing well. Starters Felix Doubront (3.24) and Junichi Tazawa (4.22) are the most consistent, although Tazawa had a rough outing on Saturday.
Relievers T.J. Large (1.00) and Dustin Richardson (1.59) are proving reliable. Bryce Cox (2.53) is showing improvement. Richie Lentz (0.00) will help the bullpen when he comes off this DL (maybe Tuesday).
In low Class A Greenville, the top of the order showed promise.
Infielder Ryan Dent (.294) went 2-for-5. Dent, a first-round draft pick in 2007, is progressing slowly.
Outfielder Mitch Dening (.300) went 3-for-5.
And shortstop Oscar Tejeda was 2-for-5. He is batting .302 in his last 10 games, after a slow start.
