Sox get Gabbard back; Carter sent down; Dogs lineup
The Boston Red Sox got lefty Kason Gabbard back from Texas, in a trade for cash.
Boston also announced that outfielder/first baseman Chris Carter has been sent back to Pawtucket. The next move, expected Friday, is the call up of outfielder Jonathan Van Every.
Gabbard, 27, who pitched for the Sea Dogs and Red Sox, was traded to Texas in the 2007 deal for Eric Gagne. Gabbard has slowly gone downhill. He was taken off the 40-man roster this year and and struggled in Triple-A (10.50 ERA in 5 relief outings).
Gabbard will report to the Red Sox extended spring training in Fort Myers.
Carter, 26, played sparingly (0-for-5, 1 RBI in 4 games) since making the major league team out of spring training.
When Rocco Baldelli went on the DL, the Sox needed a back-up center fielder. That's where Van Every fits in. Jeff Bailey stays on the Boston roster because he gives Boston the right-handed bat off the bench (which was another Baldelli role).
Now for the Sea Dogs lineup:
Josh Reddick, CF
Mark Wagner, C
Bubba Bell, RF
Aaron Bates, DH
Jorge Jimenez, 3B
Jon Still, 1B
Ryan Khoury, 2B
Reid Engel, RF
Iggy Suarez, SS
(Jarod Plummer, P)
Note: 1B Lars Anderson is getting a routine day off.
