Not a day to look at wins & losses
At least Pawtucket won. The Boston Red Sox and three of its four minor league teams all lost Thursday.
But there were good individual performances to note:
In Pawtucket's 6-4 win, former Sea Dogs sailed: catcher Dusty Brown (2 doubles, 2 RBI), right fielder Zach Daeges (double, RBI), and closer Daniel Bard (2 IP, 4 K, save)
Portland got only four hits. But as already mentioned in previous blogs, the focus was on Junichi Tazawa (5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 7 K). He looked in control.
Sea Dogs catcher Mark Wagner threw out two base runners trying to steal.
The Salem Sox made their debut in advanced Class A, losing 8-6 in 12 innings. Outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin (double) and shortstop Yamaico Navarro (2 doubles) each had two hits ... starter Kyle Weiland (3rd round pick in 2008, out of Notre Dame) did not fare well (2 1/3, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, K).
Low Class A Greenville also went extra's, losing 6-5 in 10 innings. Two catchers form last year's draft shined. Tim Federowicz (8th round, North Carfolina) and Ryan Lavarney (6th round, Yale) both went 2-for-4 with a homer. Lavarney was the DH ... Starter Stolmy Pimental: 5 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, K)
In the majors, Jon Lester and Daisuke Matsuzaka did not have great starts in Boston's two losses, but the Rays starters (Scott Kazmir and Matt Garza) shined.
After three games, only two Red Sox batters are hitting over .222 - Kevin Youkilis (.667) and Jason Bay (.300).
George Kottaras gets his first catching start of the season tonight.
One troubling stat from Thursday's loss: Both Manny Delcarmen and Hideki Okajima allowed two walks in their one frame.
I'll check in later from Hadlock.
Have a good Good Friday.
