Masterson still starting. Drew batting. Smoltz pitches off the mound.
Justin Masterson was originally on today's Red Sox pitching schedule as the first pitcher to relieve Clay Buchholz. But today's Red Sox press notes no longer have Masterson scheduled.
Instead, he will start in a minor league game on Thursday. Boston is still using Masterson as a starter - supposedly to make sure he's ready in an emergency - but he should be headed to the pen soon.
J.D. Drew is back in today's lineup for the first time since behind hit in the hand by a pitch last Friday.
John Smoltz conitinues to take slow steps to becoming a Red Sox starter. This morning, Smoltz threw off the mound for the first time this spring, throwing 40 pitches in a bullpen session.
Tuesday night's close game between the Red Sox and Yankees got out of hand in a hurry, when New York scored six runs in the eighth. Austin Jackson, a minor league outfielder who tore up Sea Dogs pitching last year, hit a grand slam off Devern Hansack.
