Six more sent down
The Red Sox dispatched six more players from the major league camp to the minors on Tuesday.
First baseman Lars Anderson and outfielders Josh Reddick and Zach Daeges were assigned to the minor league camp.
Left-handed pitchers Hunter Jones (Triple-A Pawtucket) and Felix Doubront (Class A Salem, Va.) and catcher Mark Wagner (Double-A Portland) were optioned to specific teams.
The difference between being :assigned" and "optioned" is a technical one, based on Jones, Wagner and Doubront being on the Red Sox 40-man roster.
None of the moves were surprising. It was thought that Doubront had a chance to make the Portland rotation at the start of the year. He still could, but it is more likely he makes it to Hadlock during the season.
Doubront, 21, pitched in low Class A Greenville most of last year (118 K's in 115 innings). Boston put him on the 40-man roster to protect him from another team raiding him in the Rule V draft. Because of his 40-man status, the Red Sox need to move him through the system. He will not be in Salem (Boston's new advanced Class A affiliate) for long.
Wagner, a catching prospect, hit .219 in Portland last year. The Red Sox obviously want to see those numbers improve.
